ROCKS
Twice Born | Scottish Ballet (2023) | Designed by Ruby Law
5 of these rocks were carved from polystyrene, scrimmed and painted. The underside was a birch base with felt to enable them to be easily moved on stage. The smaller rocks that had to drop onto the stage from a kabuki drop, were made from Plastazote foam. After assembling a base shape, layers of plastazote were added and carved to shape/ textured using a powerfile. During the performance, the dancers stack the rocks on top of each other. Each rock was fitted with magnets. The underside of the rocks was textured using vermiculite to easily identify the position in which they were stacked. The rocks were then painted with a series of Rosco paint sprays and washes, spattering and a shellac and water effect. Pictograms were then painted onto the rocks using invisible UV paint.
